The Rose of Sebastopol – Katherine McMahon

This book was slow to pick up, but with very engaging characters.

Mariella is a typical English lady of the 1850's.  Sewing and charity took up much of her time.  When her cousin, Rosa,  goes missing in Russia during the Crimean war and she finds that her fiance, who is a doctor that was in Russia as well, is ill and in Italy, she goes to visit him.

He insists she go find Rosa, and off she goes, with Nora, Rosa's mother's nurse.

While there, Nora and Mariella find Rosa's step-brother Max.

An interesting and engaging view of the Crimean war from the point of view of an English lady who fears her fiance may be in love with her cousin.
